Connectives

Connectives

A word that joins the words or sentences is called connective. Malmkjӕr (478), is defined as an indeclinable part of speech that links other parts of speech, in company with which it has significance, by classifying their meaning or relations. According to Leung (11), conjunctions have been studied under various labels and have drawn much attention from various scholars in the field of English/Linguistics over time: Halliday and Hasan (13) treat them as “linguistic devices that create cohesion”, while Sanders and Maat describe them as a “semantic relation that is explicitly marked” (1-2). According to Er, as cited by Aidinlou and Reshadi (611), conjunctions are a “semantic connection between two clauses”. Furthermore, Leung (11) cites four scholars in this regard. These are: Schiffrin, who treats conjunctions as “discourse markers”, Fraser considers them as a “pragmatic class of lexical expressions”, or simply, “pragmatic markers”, while Rouchota states that conjunctions “encode different meanings, andthat they can be a procedural device”, and lastly, Caron conceives conjunctions simply as being used “to express various kinds of relations between utterances”.

Basically there are two types of connectives. They are coordinating and subordinating.

1.   Coordinating connectives: A conjunction that is used to join the clauses of equal rank. . In other words, they generally connect sentence elements of the same grammatical class such as nouns with nouns, adverbs with adverbs, phrases with phrases and clauses with clauses. They also link two sentences that do not depend on each other for meaning. They are simply referred to as coordinators, and the art of joining two words, phrases, clauses or sentences using coordinators is known as coordination.

There are four types of coordinating connectives. They are:

i.              Cumulative: According to Murthy (215), These are used to join statements, or they add one statement to another. They include: and, so, both … and, as well as, not only … but also, no less than, etc.

ii.            Alternative: These are used to express a choice between two alternatives. They include: or, nor, either…or, neither…nor, else, whether…or, otherwise, etc.

iii.          Adversative: According to Halliday and Hasan (250), the meaning of the adversative relation is „contrary to expectation‟. The expectation may be derived from the content of what is being said, or from the communication process, in a speaker hearer situation. They include: but, still, only,.

iv.          Illative: so,therefore

2.   Functions of coordinating connectives:

i.              To combine two independent clause of same type: He was a good boy and he stood first in the class.

ii.            To combine two independent  clauses of the opposite type: He was intelligent but he failed the exam,

iii.          To combine two independent clauses denoting effect or inference: he did not study therefore he failed.

iv.          To combine two independent clauses to denote choice between two things: either come or go away.

3.   Subordinating connectives: Subordinating conjunctions are words which are used to link subordinate clauses with the main clauses in a complex sentence. They are conjunctions used to join clauses of unequal rank. In other words, they are used to join an independent or main (principal) clause with a dependent (subordinate) one that relies on the main clause for meaning and relevance. This means that main clauses can stand alone and do not depend on subordinate clauses while subordinate clauses cannot stand alone. As Aarts (46) notes, “another way of putting this is to say that subordination is a type of hypotaxis, a Greek term that means originally „syntactic underneath arrangement‟. This means that a subordinating conjunction causes the clause it appears in to become dependent, and that it will only be a sentence fragment unless it is joined to an independent clause. Simply, subordinating conjunctions are called subordinators and the art of using a subordinator to join two clauses together is referred to as subordination. According to Quirk and Greenbaum (309), subordination is a non-symmetrical relation, holding between two clauses in such a way that one is a constituent or part of the other. Also according to Huddleston (194), subordination in contrast with coordination, involves inequality, that is, a relation between a dependent (the subordinate element) and a head (the superordinate one). A subordinating conjunction can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. According to Sahebkeir & Aidinlou (125), subordinating conjunctions are also known as transitional conjunctions.

Subordinating conjunctions are words which are used to link subordinate clauses with the main clauses in a complex sentence. They are conjunctions used to join clauses of unequal rank. In other words, they are used to join an independent or main (principal) clause with a dependent (subordinate) one that relies on the main clause for meaning and relevance. A subordinating conjunction can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. According to Sahebkeir & Aidinlou (125), subordinating conjunctions are also known as transitional conjunctions. They are divided into eight sub groups: time, cause or reason, purpose, result or consequences, condition circumstances, concession and comparison.

                                                  i.         Time These are subordinators that express consequence in time or succession in time between clauses. Examples include: before, after, till, since, when, while, etc.

ii.         Cause or Reason These are subordinators that express causal relations in the simplest form that mean „as a result of this‟ or „because of this‟. Examples include: because, since, as, and for.

iii.         Result or Consequence Result/consequence and cause/reason are closely related but the main subordinator here is so and that. These have the relation that is expressed to mean „for this reason‟ which leads to something else.

iv.         Purpose Purpose and cause/reason are closely related and the subordinators involved have the sense of „for this reason‟ or „for this purpose‟. They include: that, so that, in order that, lest, etc.

                                                 v.         Condition According to Quirk and Greenbaum (323), conditional subordinators state the dependence of one circumstance or set of circumstances on another. The main subordinators in English are if and unless. The if-clause could either be a positive or a negative condition while the unless-clause is a negative one.

vi.         Circumstance These subordinators express a fulfilled condition, or to put differently, a relation between a premise in the subordinate clause and the conclusion drawn from it in the main clause. An example of this is a special circumstantial compound conjunction: seeing that.

vii.         Concession These are subordinators that express the sense of „reluctant yielding‟. They are usually introduced by though and it’s more formal variant although, even if and occasionally if. Others include however, whereas, etc.

viii.         Comparison These are subordinators that express comparison between dependent and independent clauses. They are introduced by than, as-as, as, etc. Sentential examples: She respected me more than I thought.

4.   Functions of subordinating conjunctions:

1.   To join principal and main clause:

a.    To denote time

b.   To denote cause

c.    To denote effect

d.   To denote purpose

e.    To denote manner

f.     To denote degree

g.    To denote condition

h.    To denote contrast

Name of book/ title: Half a
Life

Author: V. S. Naipaul

Genre: Novel

Published date: 2001

Pages: 211

Half a Life is the novel written by V. S. Naipaul presents the story of Willie Somerset Chandran. It presents the story of migration of shifting from india to England to Africa. The novel begins with an omniscient narrator, but after half a page Naipaul switches to the first person, allowing Willie's father to recount the story of the origins of Willie's unlikely name, as well as his own pathetic, misled life. Naipaul has a good example of storytelling.

Willie's father complains that he "unfitted" himself for life by abandoning his education ("in response to the mahatma's call"). Though from a good family, with a promising future, he became a mendicant -- the only escape he could see for a foolish predicament he got himself into. Not only that, he also takes a vow of silence -- rendering him unable to explain himself, or to tell his tale. Silence, of course, easily passes for wisdom, and Willie's father chances to impress a visiting writer -- Somerset Maugham. So much so that Maugham recounts their meeting in a travel book he subsequent publishes, and eventually -- so Willie's father -- "foreign critics began to see in me the spiritual source of The Razor's Edge". Willie's father got himself into this situation by turning his back on family and tradition and looking to "marry the lowest person I could find". At university there is a "backward" caste student he has his eyes on. Not because she is attractive or appealing, but because she fits his image of the sacrifice he wants to make. He winds up marrying her, and he even makes something of his life (through his oddly found fame), but it is, understandably, a family history that shocks and disappoints young Willie. then his escape to England, to study. Here, too, stories are important, a form of communication in the household where Willie (like his father before him) does not feel he can express things directly. Willie writes several compositions which are lauded at school but which outrage and disappoint his actual audience -- his father.
Willie escapes to England, eager just "to get away from what he knew". Despite not having finished his own mission-school education, despite already being twenty, he gets a scholarship to "a college of education for mature students". The world he enters is a completely foreign one. He fumbles -- for friendship, for sex, for acceptance -- and achieves at least a measure of most of these. He finds mate follows her and further get satisfied and goes to Germany where his sister living and narrates own story and completes. The novel ends with no proper enduring.

The novel presents the Indian subcontinent life and its ups and downs in cross cultural aspects. It creates frustration in characters. Willie is an example.
Willie also writes a book, and is able to publish it. It is not a success, and critical reception. He thought, “Let the book die. Let it fade away. Let me not be reminded of it. I will write no more. This book was not something I should have done, anyway. It was artificial and false”.

The book presents the present dilemma complex of south Asian youngsters as they are willing to flee to abroad as Willie wants. But they are not confident enough to carry the job as a career as willie gives up publishing a book. It shades the light of positivity in youngsters but soon they are saddened by the decision of the principle character. He has no firm objectives, no clear ambitions simply moments of promise. He was free to present himself as he wished. He could, as it were, write his own revolution. The possibilities were dizzying. He could, within reason, remake himself and his past and his ancestry he can’t grab the opportunities, simply disillusioned his ambition.

The book presents the fear the writer who may imagine getting unsacred however the constant fear of failure has been the one of dark side of the book. The language is simple to understand. The flow of the plot makes reader engaged with the text.  If the author has created the main character to fight with the situation, the positive strength could have spread to modern immigrants. Nevertheless, the book has its own impression and get the title justified.

Leisure by W.H. Davies

The poem presents the problems of the modern life. It depicts how modernity alienated people from simplicity. It has snatched the simplicity from modern people. People need care and comfort. However, they have no leisure to enjoy the leisure. It upholds the importance of nature.

It satirizes on a modern way of living.

It highlights the proximity to the nature.

It stresses on importance of leisure in one’s life.

Modernity gets fused into the body implicitly.

Modernity keeps people separated from nature.

People need to know to celebrate simplicity.

Summary:

The poem highlights the importance of being close to nature. It begins with inhalation process.  The living life is full of care. It depicts the life being busy mostly with necessities required for the body. They do not have enough time for their mind. They are busy as if they do not have enough time to stand and stare. He further talks about modern time. They even cannot stay beneath the branches as sheep or cow can do.

The poem talks about the laps in modern society as they lack the time. People have busy schedule. They hardly have time to go through the natural things. They have no time to see the woods though they pass by it. They donot know about the wild life and their action. They cannot see the stars or day light. They are slowly detached from the nature.

People have no time to turn or observe the beautiful girls. They can not tell how they step while dance. They have no time to see the smile on the face of the girls. The laps have been used metaphor for the poor mentality, poverty in mentality of the modern man who has no any time to go through the natute.

The poem deals with how simple things touch the human. It deals with the people should manage time to get complete understanding of one’s soul and mind. A peron has to invest the time in simple things. It goes in the line of proximity to nature.

The poem is rich in its literary device. It begins with irony. The use of rhetorical question makes poem more literary. It has alliteration. It has refrain too.
